Существует много способов для перекодировки видео в ubuntu(Linux). Например это можно сделать с помощью handbrake.

But true way  is terminal with ffmpeg or avconv.

Setup avconv in ubuntu

sudo apt-get install libav-to

Making and installing ffmpeg on Ubuntu 14.04 and Ubuntu 16.04

Making now is Download source, making, install dependencies and installing.

You need to download this script(zipped). See code bellow

Installing  ffmpeg from repository

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mc3man/trusty-media
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install ffmpeg

USING FFMPEG AND AVCON

AVCONV(EXAMPE) – convert avi to mp4 with x264

avconv -i "input.avi" -c:v libx264 -c:a copy outputfile.mp4

FFMPEG(EXAMPLE) – convert avi to mp4 with mpeg4

ffmpeg -i "input.avi" -acodec ac3 -b:a 128k -vcodec mpeg4 -b:v 1200k -flags +aic+mv4 output.mp4
